The Office of International Initiatives presented an informative fair for students interested in the upcoming Study Abroad programs. Students are able to travel to a variety of places such as London, France, Panama and Costa Rica.  During the trips, students are eligible to receive credits and  expand their cultural knowledge.

The Study Abroad program recently was promoted in the Student Union Breezeway. There are a variety of programs, from criminal justice to biology to business. At the fair, which was hosted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Jan. 18 and 19, there was information given to interested students.

“The deadline is February 16th, so that’s why we’re pushing this today and tomorrow and also at the first of the month and by Valentine’s Day,” said Dr. Lucia Harrison, Director of the Office of International Initiatives.

Harrison described why they were hosting the Study Abroad Fair and what was offered at the table outside the bookstore.

“We are promoting the study abroad, which is a wonderful way for students to receive credit and study in a different setting and open their mind,” said Harrison. “Hopefully, to have a good knowledge of the culture, the classes we offer and the different programs the different campus where we have programs. Just basic information.”

Hannah Furlan, a graduate assistant who helped students that stopped by the table, expanded on what the table had to offer.

“Just some general information like how to apply, and where to find some of the resources online of the paperwork that you have to fill out,” said Furlan.

Furlan has not yet been on a study abroad trip but likes promoting it and expressed her desire to attend one of the future programs.

“I personally haven’t, but I’ve always wanted to,” said Furlan. “It hasn’t worked out for me yet, but I do hope to one day to be able to go.”

There are 11 upcoming programs in 2017. The trips go to London, France, Panama, Munich, Vienna, Salzburg, Spain and Costa Rica.

The programs go up to four hours credit. Students travel with professors. Applicants are interviewed by the faculty coordinator of the program that they want to go on before turning in the Study Abroad application and the $100 deposit. Once the application is complete, the student will need to submit passport copies, photos and their flight itinerary. Then, they are able to fly to the country and complete the program.

If the applicant wishes, they can apply for a study abroad scholarship. These scholarships are sponsored by various sources. The deadlines for the scholarships depend on which one the applicant wants. The Student Government Association Study Abroad Scholarship and the Institute for Global and Domestic Development Study Abroad Scholarship’s deadlines have already passed, leaving eight different scholarships available to applicants.

There will be more Study Abroad Fairs as the deadlines come closer. For more information, email [email protected] or call the Office of International Initiatives at 985-549-2135.
