Graduates to be honored with rings

Seniors have a limited time to sign up for “Ring Ceremony” this fall.

“Ring Ceremony” will take place on Nov. 28 from 6-8 p.m. in the Student Union Grand Ballroom. Students who have completed 90 hours towards their degree and have ordered their graduation rings from Balfour can register for the event. The last day to register is Nov. 26.

Associate Director of Alumni Programming Jennifer O’Neil shared how the “Ring Ceremony” has evolved.

“The ‘Ring Ceremony’ tradition began about 10 years ago and evolved each year since,” said O’Neil. “The event was originally held in the Student Union Theater but outgrew that space. The program has also been tweaked throughout the years to include Roomie, the cheerleaders, live music, video and the reception after the event.”

Executive Director of Alumni Relations Michelle Biggs explained what attendees can expect.

“The ring recipients will accept their rings directly from Dr. Crain, and they’ll take a picture with him up on the stage,” said Biggs. “We have a video that runs that explains the significance of all of the symbols on the ring, talking about the various traditions of the university and what the ring signifies. Then, I will administer the ‘Oath of Pride’ and talk a little bit more about the significance of the ring.”

There will be a reception after the event, and the catering will be provided by Aramark.

O’Neil discussed the parking process for guests.

“Because the event is after normal business hours, no special parking pass is required,” informed O’Neil. “We do expect nearly 300 people to attend the event, so we encourage guests and students to arrive early to get a close parking spot.”

O’Neil encouraged seniors to attend this occasion.

“It gives them a chance to celebrate this important milestone with their friends and family,” said O’Neil. “It’s also an opportunity for Dr. Crain to officially present the ring to each student and be the first one to congratulate them. Students and their families will learn about the ring’s symbolism and traditions too.”
