    Student accepted to leadership conference

Kali Johnson, a Southeastern Senior, has been selected to be a part of a program called Leadership DELTA, and attend the annual conference held in Detroit, MI from Oct. 14-17, 2010.

Johnson was selected after applying for the prestigious program and receiving letters of recommendation.  The application requirements are set very high.  A senior ranking and a 3.2 grade point average is required along with elite leadership qualities and characteristics.   Mathematics, science, engineering, computer science and business majors are normally the students Leadership DELTA is looks for.  Johnson is a Mass Communications major, so her being chosen without having one of these majors sets her apart and proves exactly how talented she is and well she stood out to the Leadership DELTA program.

“Kali is independent and strong willed, with an unwavering work ethic. Her dedications to academics and community service enhance her leadership skills and have certainly prepared her for this awesome opportunity,” said Sandy Summers, Johnson’s sorority advisor.  Summers added, “Kali is independent and strong willed and has an unwavering work effort.”

Leadership DELTA focuses on building strong leadership skills. The program also concentrates on creating an effective career path based on career interests and goals, preparing the participants to enter the work force, and applying leadership skills effectively.  These skills are to be used while in the DELTA program, their community, and the everyday lives of the students.

Leadership DELTA participants participate for one year.  The program begins in September 2010 and ends in August 2011 this year. The program has been sponsored by General Electric Company and will continue the tradition this year.  The conference held each year varies in location. Johnson will be attending.

Each participant in Leadership DELTA is paired with a mentor.  This mentor is someone who understands both the chosen career field of their student leader, and what it takes to be successful on a short and long-term basis.  At different times during the program, student participants, guided by their mentors, complete assignments that continue in building their leadership skills and expose them to key leaders on their campuses and in their communities.  This offers excellent networking opportunities for all the participants with interest in any career venture.

Overall, Leadership DELTA is focused on giving its female student participants opportunities to meet their very own role models and get their names out and known in their chosen fields of study.  The skills and knowledge gained from this program are unlike any other. Internships, part-time work, and most importantly, experience are only a few of the opportunities Johnson will come in contact with while in Leadership DELTA.
