Students on campus were entertained with games, performances by students from Greek organizations and a DJ during the “Block Party.”

“Block Party” was organized as a part of the Welcome Week activities on Aug. 23 on SGA drive. The event which was scheduled for 6 p.m. started late around 8 p.m. due to inclement weather.

The event was sponsored by the Student Government Association, Office of Student Engagement and University Housing.

Homecoming King Cedric Dent, a senior social work major, was happy with the turn out even though the event started late.

“The weather kind of messed it up but everything got flowing eventually,” said Dent. “Students came out. The overall goal was to get students to come out on Friday which we did. So, everything worked out.”

Dent felt that the overall Welcome Week events were successful.

“We had to postpone lot of events, but it was successful despite the weather,” said Dent. “We worked everything out.”

Kayla Monlyn, a senior communication sciences and disorders major, participated in the Block Party. She was among the members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. who showcased their talent in the event.

“I think it’s something good for the freshmen to get into,” said Monlyn. “Not just the freshmen but everyone to come together on a Friday because we are almost kind of known for going home like a day school. So, I think it’s a good thing for the people to come out and enjoy, get some food.”

Dent felt that Welcome Week was successful to make freshmen feel welcomed.

“To get students here on a Friday says a lot,” said Dent. “So, it’s a product of doing welcome for the students the right way.”
