Devonte Williams, a senior running back, rushed 63 yards and one touchdown in Saturday’s victory against Lamar University. The next matchup for the Lions will be against Northwestern State University.

In the second home game of the season, the university football team defeated Southland Conference rival Lamar University.

The Lions defeated the Cardinals 45-34 in a game that saw seven touchdowns from the Lions offense.

Frank Scelfo, head coach of football, was happy with the team performance.

“We played a really good team tonight in Lamar,” said Scelfo. “They have not lost a regular-season Southland Conference game in over a year. They were also a playoff team last year. You saw our team do really well in the first half and in the second half.”

Scelfo shared where he thought the team needs to improve for their next game.

“Unfortunately, we busted too many coverages on defense,” stated Scelfo. “We blew way too many assignments on the defensive side of the ball. We lacked a lot of discipline on defense in the first half. At halftime, we told them to take a deep breath and relax, and we came out and executed. You saw our defense come out in the second half and perform really well.”

Chason Virgil, a senior quarterback, talked about how well the Lions wide receivers did in the first Southland Conference win of the year.

“We had a lot of guys step up tonight,” explained Virgil. “Juwan, Austin, Lorenzo, CJ and Ed did a great job getting open. They made my job easy tonight. All I had to do was make my reads, and place the ball where they could catch it.”

WIth the victory, the university improves to 2-1 on the season. Lions will play their next game on the road against Northwestern State University on Sept. 28 at 6 p.m.
