With music playing softly in the background, students could enjoy a night of conversations and games such as Jenga, Connect Four, Never Have I Ever: The Game of Poor Life Decisions and more.

The Campus Activities Board sponsored the event Game On, Game Night, which took place on Tuesday, Sept. 27 in the Student Union Theatre. There were several card and board games as well as a setup for video game consoles. Paul Ferguson Jr., a junior general studies major was playing against other students in a game of UNO.

“I’m more of a video and board gamer at heart, rather than a card gamer, so this brings out my competitive side,” said Ferguson.

A retro popcorn machine filled the air with movie theater-like smells. Popcorn, soda and water were provided for the participating players.

Students who attended the first Game Night in August also returned.

“It was my birthday on the first game night,” said Pierra West, a sophomore early childhood education major.

“We came to the first one and liked it. We like playing games. I saw the billboard and was like,  ‘game night, we should go,’” said Symone Puckett, a sophomore nursing major.

As towers of Jenga fell, cries of frustration and excitement rang out. There was a television in the background silently playing lists of other CAB events, reminders to vote for the Halloween themed movie to premiere on Oct. 24 and reminders to attend Votes and Ice Cream Votes. The murmured conversations at various tables were accompanied by the sounds of clattering Connect Four chips and laughter. The old theater was intended to be used for video games, but no one brought a gaming console.

CAB events are a great way to have something to do, as well as to meet new people.

“I was sitting in my room thinking I needed new friends,” said Helen Launey, a freshman communication major. “I was bored so I came.”

Students also used the settled atmosphere to study and do homework.

“I was playing Monopoly then I left with my friends. This is my first time studying here,” said Jade Norbert, a freshman Industrial Technology major, as she did homework.

The groups fluctuated as time passed. Popular games such as UNO and Battleship were rarely left by any combination of the players. Jenga players ended up designing and constructing structures out of the blocks, rather than playing the traditional game. As the night dwindled to an end, only a few tables of players were left. The majority of players were playing Never Have I Ever: The Game of Poor Life Decisions, laughing at the ridiculousness of the cards. When the night ended, it was amid groans of discontent. Students were able to hang out and meet new friends while playing game after game of traditional board and card games as well as some more modern games.
