Alpha Sigma Tau sorority hosted its 3rd annual fund raising event, the Mr. Green and Gold pageant.
The pageant was held Wednesday, Nov. 9 in the Student Union Theater at 6 p.m.
“The purpose of the pageant is to give everyone a break,” said Nina Begue, AST Director of Fund raising. “We want to get more involved at Southeastern and give the students a night where you can take a break from the work, come have fun and enjoy themselves.”
The profits of the fundraiser went to AST for the betterment of their sorority and other important factors.
“The profits are going to things such as fixing up the sorority house, providing education for our members and helping with the alumni chapter,” said Amber McGrath, a senior biology major.
Audience members and sorority members were already excited about the pageant before it began.
“I feel it’s going to be successful,” said McGrath. “We have eight wonderful contestants.”
The pageant consisted of multiple categories that the contestants had to participate in: casual, talent, beach attire and formal.
Last year’s winner, Christian Owens, a sophomore criminal justice major, felt as though it was important to crown this year’s Mr. Green and Gold.
“It’s really an honor to be able to pass the torch to someone else,” said Owens. “They will represent the ladies of Alpha Sigma Tau. It’s a bittersweet moment to let go of the crown even though it didn’t fit my head.’”
Owens passed the crown to Brandon Fogg, a senior sports management major. Fogg was nervous but also excited about being crowned as the new Mr. Green and Gold.
“I was really nervous, but it’s a great experience just getting the opportunity to have fun and be forever linked in a way with the women of Alpha Sigma Tau,” said Fogg.
Fogg believed that his dancing for his talent performance was the key to winning the crowd over.
“My strongest category was definitely the talent because I didn’t have to worry about stuttering,” said Fogg. “I was able just to cut loose and do my thing.”
There was not much change in this year’s pageant since the past years.
“Everything is pretty much the same,” said Begue. “Only thing is different is the judges, and we had more contestants last year.”
Even though Fogg was crowned Mr. Green and Gold all contestants left with a gift bag made by the ladies of AST.
“In the gift baskets we have our Mr. Green and Gold, T-shirt for the year, a pair of sunglasses that said AST on them, a treat bag and a thank you card,” said Begue.
Audience members left the event laughing and excited.
“I was laughing the whole time,” said Krystal Waddell, a sophomore accounting major. “Supporting the Greek community is very important.”
There are not many requirements to become Mr. Green and Gold.
“You just have to be a male at Southeastern,” said Begue. “Fill out the application, and pay the application fee. After that, you’re ready to go.”
