A variety of employers offered positions to students who were willing to balance work with study.

The Office of Career Services organized the annual Part-Time Job Fair in the Student Union Breezeway on Aug. 31.

One of the stations belonged to the United States Marine Corps. Marine Recruiter Sgt. Deven Rafter described his objective of coming to the fair.

“We are looking for students who are on the path of getting a degree but still want to serve the country and might even need a little bit of financial help,” said Rafter. “The Marine Corp has a great reserve program, which is what we’re looking for here at Southeastern.”

Rafter went on to say about how the Marine Corps got involved with the fair.

“We’ve been working with this program,” said Rafter. “We have many reservists that are already in the school. They started as a Marine Corps Reservist and they go to school at Southeastern. They let us know about the Career Fair and how easy it is for the Marine Corp to work around the Southeastern schedule.”

A Victory Agency, Chick-fil-A in Hammond, First Guarantee Bank, the New Orleans Pelicans and Jackson Hewitt Tax Service were some of recruiters also present in the fair.

For some like representative of Jackson Hewitt Tax Service Ashlie Downey, this was not the first time that they attended the fair.  

“I’ve been doing it for four years now,” said Downey. “I always have a good time. I love interacting with the college students. I just got on the website and kind of looked and found Career Services and went from there.”

Downey pointed out the qualities she looked for in students while recruiting.

“Basically, I am looking for a personality with somebody that’s approachable, that’s easy to talk to and kinda keeps the conversation going,” said Downey. “Somebody that would be good to work with the public.”

According to Downey, the program has been getting better due to students being more approachable.

“Yeah, it’s got better from the first time I did it,” said Downey. “Especially when the classes let out, it’s pretty packed and now it seems like they like to approach the table more. I think at first they were kinda stand off-ish.”

However, the fair also consisted of recruiters who had their first experience of the fair.

“I come to school often,” said Rafter. “This is the first time we’ve actually come to the fair. We plan on making an official thing where we come every year.”

The fair spanned from 9:30 a.m.to 2:30 p.m. and experienced a good attendance.

“I think the turnout was pretty good,” said Rafter. “I think that everybody got their information that they wanted to. I believe that all the students enjoyed seeing everybody while they walk through the classes.”

Students also have the opportunity to interact with recruiters at the Career Fair 2017 on Sept. 21. For further information, students can visit the Office of Career Services.
