CAC paints Student Union purple for cancer awareness

Many students were shocked as they entered the War Memorial Student Union to find that it had been painted purple.
The group executing this task had three goals to share: celebrate, remember and fight back.
On Wednesday, Colleges Against Cancer (CAC) hosted a booth within the Union to share their passion for the fight against cancer and to recruit teams for the upcoming Relay For Life event at Southeastern.
Partnered with the American Cancer Society (ACS), CAC of Southeastern was formed when Trevor Vampran, a cancer survivor and sophomore studying communications at Southeastern, realized the campus did not have its own Relay For Life event, unlike many other campuses nationwide.
“As a survivor myself, I’ve participated in Relay For Lifes in the past, and I noticed that Southeastern didn’t have one held on campus,” said Vampran. “Its something I’ve been wanting to do since my first year here at Southeastern.”
When confronting this matter with his peers, a club was formed with Aunjenee’ Conor, a senior majoring  in social work, taking the reigns as executive director of the club. Despite being a new club, the members of CAC have been planning and organizing their own Relay For Life.
“We plan to host a big relay. All the school organizations can come together and have different booths and fundraisers so that we can raise money for cancer,” said Conor. “We plan to have a kick-off event for the teams so that we can recognize the teams registered online and get some more together to have a competition and really make this a big event.”
In addition to looking for teams, the organization is also looking for any survivors on campus.
“We are getting the word out and look for survivors on campus to recognize them for Southeastern,” said Conor.
The race is being held April 18 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., with times and locations to be announced.  Teams consist of 10 to 15 people who participate by relaying and camping out overnight in support of cancer awareness. If you would like to sign up a team or get further information about the club’s activities, please visit relayforlife.org/selu or like their Facebook page, Relay for Life of Southeastern Louisiana University.
