    ΔΣΘ Hosts Delta Week

Delta Sigma Theta sorority celebrated April 3-7 as “Delta Week” with a variety of events ranging from pageants, relationship discussions and seminars on how to make a successful budget.

Delta Week began with Delta Sigma Theta’s annual Mr. Crimson and Crème Pageant. The pageant took place in the Southeastern Lab School on Monday, April 4, and was hosted by Tivonsheia Broussard, a member of Delta Sigma Theta, and Deshawn Patterson, winner of Mr. DST 2010. Five contestants participated, each representing a country. Avery Strickland, a freshman business major, represented America. Chris McKinley, a junior organizational communications major, represented Egypt. Kendrick Griffin, a member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and a sophomore business management major, represented France. Freshman kinesiology major Davasia Jones represented the country of Haiti. Joshua Allen, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and a sophomore music education major, represented the country of South Africa.

The event ended with the announcement of Christopher McKinley as Mr. DST 2011 and Kendrick Griffin as 1st Runner Up.

“Chris is a known leader on campus, and he will represent Delta Sigma Theta well,” said Dynnishea Jones, a member of Delta Sigma Theta.

“It is truly an honor and a privilege to be able to represent DST,” said McKinley. “I’m humbled by it.”

On April 5, Delta Sigma Theta held a lecture entitled “Armed Robbery: $tealing Your Future” in Student Union Room 223. The lecture covered topics such as budgeting, owning a credit card and building a credit score. Fallon O’Neal, an SELU alum and employee of LaCapital Federal Credit Union, and LSU alum Courtney Howells, a fashion entrepreneur who created the clothing line Dope, were the speakers for the evening.

Alpha Phi Alpha hosted “Law and Order: DST” Wednesday night, April 6. The event was intended to raise insight on relationship issues such as cheating and sex texting.

To start off the night, everyone in attendance at the event was asked to stand up and introduce himself or herself, stating their name, classification and major. Also, as an icebreaker, each person was also asked a question such as “Are you currently in a relationship?”, “How long was the longest relationship you’ve ever been in?”, “Do you think sex texting is appropriate?” and “They say two can play the game. Who do you think is a better player, male or female?”

After the questioning, the main event began. It was a courtroom setting and former SGA presidential candidate Christopher McKinley presided as the judge for the evening. The room was separated between males and females and several relationship scenarios were presented in the form of video clips from TV shows such as The Game and The Jamie Foxx Show.

After each scenario was presented, the men and women would take turns debating and fighting to defend their gender on the situation.

“I thought it was a phenomenal event put on by the Deltas,” said communication junior Keturah Green. “It was out of the box, unique and it gave college students, in regards to African American college students, that outlet to just talk about the issues that affect them regarding relationships.”

Following Law& Order, Delta Sigma Theta hosted an after party in the Student Union Ballroom. The event was labeled “Civil Disorder: Official After Party,” which lasted until 1:30 a.m.

The final event of Delta week was dubbed “The Getaway,” and took place in front of the Pennington Center on the evening of April 7

“‘The Getaway’ was just our way of wrapping up Delta Week and sending things off with a bang,” said Ashley Wheeler, social work major and member of Delta Sigma Theta. “I really thought the entire week was a success.”

As a DJ played music, students were served barbeque and participated in a game of volleyball and water fights.

“I really enjoyed myself today. I think there should be more events like this more often,” said Brian Dykes, sophomore kinesiology major. “Events like this bring the campus to life and just allow us to have fun.”

As the sun began to set on the evening the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta brought their week to an end on a high note.

“I think overall it was a success. I mean people came out to our events and supported us and had fun at the same time, and at the end of the day, that’s all you can ask for,” said Rashima Jenkins, member of Delta Sigma Theta.
