Students filled the stands of the University Center last Thursday night to watch and participate in Think Fast, an interactive game show hosted by the Campus Activities Board (CAB). The event was an effort to teach students about substance abuse in an interesting and fun way.
“It went well. It was very educational and students had fun while learning,” said Todd McElroy, CAB Coordinator. “Combining the two, we came out with a great evening.”
Students formed groups that worked together to score points by correctly answering trivia questions. Questions were answered by remote during rounds one and two. During the speed rounds however, one representative from each team competed on stage, pressing a buzzer to submit a final answer.
The game covered several topics about modern pop culture, sports and drug awareness. Each team was given three clues and two chances to answer the questions correctly.
Bonnie Lavigne, a freshman vocal performance major, wowed the crowd with her vocals singing Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You.” She won the American Idol competition and earned the Pink Panthers, her teammates and Phi Mu sisters, an automatic placement in the final round.
Three-year old Tiffany Thomas was eager to participate in the dance competition. She thrilled the crowd with her moves and gained enough votes to win the dance war.
Between the first and final rounds, Southeastern alumnus, Bridget Bailey briefly spoke to the students about drug awareness. She also quizzed students on related issues and statistics.
Jared Magee, a senior integrative biology major, was the first place winner of the final round and was awarded $140. He decided he would split his reward among his teammates, the brothers of Theta Xi Fraternity.
Diana Marcantel, a sophomore political science major, came in second place receiving a $40 cash prize followed by Logan Luquette, a sophomore English major, who earned $20 as the third place winner.
“I am taking my team to Menchies with my prize money,” said Marcantel. “My favorite part of the competition was answering questions with my team.”
Students were able to enjoy themselves through competition and education in a safe and familiar environment.
“I loved it,” said Carrie Dellinger, a junior nursing major. “I thought it was so much fun. I would definitely attend if they had it again.”
