    Marketing instructor teaches passion, initiative

Students stepping into the office of David Faucheux, marketing and public relations instructor, will notice walls adorned with motivational posters, printout sheets marked with encouraging messages and cards from students showing appreciation for everything Faucheux has taught them.  One particularly striking item one may find in his office is a binder labeled “The Book of Possibilities.”
The Book of Possibilities is a project that all of Faucheux’s students must complete which is inspired by the movie “Last Holiday” starring Queen Latifah, in which the protagonist owns a “Book of Possibilities”
“The first page is your bio and vision statement,” said Faucheux. “[It lists] your qualities, what separates you from everyone else, where you expect to be 20 years from now, your vision for your future. For most college students, they don’t know that answer. It takes a lot of soul searching.”
Other features of The Book of Possibilities include the student’s “bucket list,” a personal story that motivates the student and things the student wants out of life. The purpose of this project is to have a binder filled with one’s motivations and passions to bring to job interviews after graduating. This show of initiative and creativity brings a unique impression to potential employers.
“As you can tell, my class is no ordinary class,” said Faucheux. “My class is an experience filled with energy, passion and enthusiasm.  My class is an opportunity to not only learn the essentials of marketing and public relations but also the essentials to navigate your journey in life.”
Faucheux strongly encourages students to pursue their dreams and to develop an enthusiasm for life. His two most favored phrases are “Carpe diem,” or “Seize the day,” and “Ancora impora,” or “I am still learning.”
Faucheux worked in marketing at AT&T for 24 years, but he began working at Southeastern in the fall of 2012 to pursue his true passion, which is teaching. Faucheux put his passion on hold so that he could pursue another dream: to buy his parents a house.
“I actually hired a general contractor to build a custom home for them,” said Faucheux. “It was a very rewarding and emotional experience when they turned the key to their new home– their first home that was actually theirs.”
Though Faucheaux took some detours to pursue his passion, he stresses that he never lost sight of his dream and encourages his students to show the same idealism in their lives.
“There’s things that I wanted to do in my life that, if I went into the teaching profession, I couldn’t do,” said Faucheux. “I couldn’t build my mom and dad a home, and mine too. I had to kind of put my dream on hold, but that was always a driving force. I knew what I wanted to become… Sometimes you have to put your dreams on hold for financial reasons, but you never, ever lose that dream. You always, in the back of your mind, say ‘I’m going to make it someday.'”
Students respond well to Faucheux’s passion and enthusiasm. In his year at Southeastern, Faucheux has collected dozens of emails from students thanking him for his encouragement and invaluable teaching skills.
“I really like his class,” said Branden Summers, senior marketing major who is currently enrolled in Faucheux’s Marketing 314 class. “The reason I like his class so much is because he brings so much real world experience in the classroom. With him working at AT&T and different jobs before coming to Southeastern, he’s got necessary experience that he’s able to pass along to us.”
Jennifer Jarreau, senior general studies major, chose to enroll in Faucheux’s Marketing 314 class after hearing positive comments from other students.
“I love it,” said Jarreau. “It’s by far my favorite class that I’ve taken at Southeastern… [The best thing he teaches in his class is] definitely just go after your dreams and whatever you want to do. You can do it if you think that you can.”
Students interested in learning from Faucheux may enroll in his Marketing 303 and Marketing 314 classes to grow both professionally and personally.
