A Southeastern environmental group called Reconnect is trying to get healthier food in the cafeteria.
Reconnect is a group working to improve the community with things such as recycling, picking up trash and trying to have Southeastern use food that has been grown locally throughout Louisiana.
The name of this program is the Real Food Challenge, which is a program that is trying to get real food into colleges around the country.
According to the Real Food Challenge Web site, they would like to have 20 percent real food on college campuses by the year 2020.
Spreading the word around Southeastern can help the Real Food Challenge to reach their goal.
The Reconnect group will be hosting food day awareness on October 24, which is national food day.
The Food Day Awareness program is going to be held from 10 a.m.- 2p.m. in the Student Union.
“We’re planning to have local farmers from southern Louisiana and Mississippi to come in and host a farmer’s market,” said sociology graduate student Bonnie May.
