Homecoming Court, freshman senator applications available

Applications for the 2013 Homecoming Court and freshman senator elections are now available in the Office of Student Engagement and on their webpage. There are two freshman senator positions and 14 places on the Homecoming Court.
“The first step in the process to run for either election starts with filling out the application and turning it in to the Office of Student Engagement,” said Tim Reling, a senior double majoring in psychology and criminal justice, as well as election board chair. “After successfully turning in their application packets, those students who are running in the elections will be required to attend one of our meetings. Once they are there, I will explain the requirements to run for the positions of senator and court as well as go into detail about the campaigning rules. After that, the rest is on the candidates to try to get elected.”
For a place on either court or the Student Government Association senate, students must meet a set criteria.
Students wishing to run for a freshman senator position must be enrolled full time, be in good standing with the university and be registered in at least two student organizations. They must also have and maintain a minimum 2.5 semester and cumulative GPA unless they are a first semester freshman.
“Freshman senators will be responsible for representing their class in the senate in order to appropriately address the needs and concerns of our student body,” said Reling. “They will be writing and passing legislation in order to address whatever concerns or changes that they see could benefit the students.”
In order to run for the 2013 Homecoming Court, students must be enrolled full-time unless they are a graduating senior.
“The Homecoming Court will be responsible for being the face of Southeastern for the next year,” said Reling. “It is a prestigious title that many should strive to achieve.”
Homecoming Court nominees are restricted to verbal campaigning only. No signs or giveaways are allowed. Campaigning via Facebook and telephone, however, is allowed.
Students who turn in applications for both freshman senator and Homecoming Court will be required to attend one informational meeting, either on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 5:30 p.m. or Thursday, Sept. 19 at 5:30 p.m. Both meetings will take place in Student Union Room 222.
Voting will take place on Sept. 30, Oct. 1 and Oct. 2 from 7:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. After the polls close, Reling will announce the results at 5:30 p.m. in the Student Union.
