Sunday, Sept. 25 kicked off the fall 2011 series of “Music in the Park” with the Big Fun Brass Band. This event, organized by the Hammond Chamber of Commerce, is held on Sundays from 3-6pm in Cate Square Park.
Attendees of the brass band concert enjoyed relaxing on the lawn or under the shade of trees or the park pavilion while listening to New Orleans-style music. The weather was pleasant for the outdoor concert, with the slight heat eased by free water provided by the Hammond Chamber.
“Music in the Park” is a result of collaboration between the members of the chamber committee.
“We were discussing as a committee something that could help improve the quality of life in Hammond,” said Executive Director of the Hammond Chamber Charlotte Banks. “So, the start [of this event] was a culmination of ideas. The members borrowed ideas from cities they have visited where there is regularly live outdoor music.”
According to Banks, this event usually draws about 100-150 people, but this Sunday there were less, due to the Saints football game during the same time. Many attendees brought their dogs or children, so a diverse group of people as well as animals were able to enjoy the music.
Raising Cane’s was the official sponsor of Music in the Park.
“We are excited about being the official sponsors for Music in the Park,” said Cody Yawn, general manager at the West Thomas location. “Raising Cane’s is always looking for ways to be involved in our community, and we’re happy to help support up-and-coming bands in our area. Live music is a celebrated part of our culture in Hammond, especially downtown.”
Big Fun Brass Band was started by David Will, now a senior trumpet player. All but one member are music majors at Southeastern. The members are excited about the possibility of performing at more local community events like “Music in the Park” in the future.
“I think events like this around Hammond are great to help spread the history, heritage and experience of New Orleans,” said Big Fun saxophone player and sophomore music education major Jonathan Lyons.
The Hammond Chamber is continually in search for fresh, new bands to play at “Music in the Park.” Any student bands interested should submit their sample audio to the Hammond Chamber of Commerce at 400 NW Railroad Avenue or by email at director@hammondchamber.org.
