The 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll is awarded to colleges exhibiting a strong commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. This year Southeastern was placed on the President’s Honor Roll list among seven other Louisiana colleges, and 690 colleges and universities across America.
President John L. Crain is proud to have received this high honor from Washington D.C. However, the students, faculty, staff and community receive much of the credit.
“Our selection to the Honor Roll is recognition from the highest levels of the federal government,” said Crain. “It is a wonderful testament to the character of our students, faculty and staff. The Northshore can be rightfully proud of Southeastern especially when it comes to service projects, volunteerism and philanthropy.”
The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) has been in charge of determining the deserving schools since 2006. The award is a way to give back to the many college and university students who play a role in solving community problems and encouraging civic engagement.
“We congratulate the awardees and the students for their dedication to service,” said Wendy Spencer, CEO of CNCS in a press release. “These institutions have inspired students and faculty alike to roll up their sleeves and work alongside members of the community to solve problems and improve their neighbors’ lives.”
There is a multitude of campus organizations at Southeastern that offer a wide range of service opportunities. It is very easy for students to get involved and help out with their community. Southeastern is clearly no stranger to community service. The Big Event has been hugely successful in all three years it has taken place at Southeastern. There is something for everyone.
“With over 200 active student organizations on campus, there is bound to be one that fits your personality,” Crain said. “Some are strictly service-oriented while others are based on shared academic disciplines or career goals, on environmental concerns and the ideals of Greek life. You would be hard-pressed to find any organization that does not involve some element of community service and/or philanthropy. Get involved. Doing so will enhance your college experience many times over.”
