The Student Government Association (SGA) recently refilled eight vacant senate positions. The positions were held by students who were elected, but unable to fulfill their term due to scheduling conflicts or failure to meet the 2.5 GPA requirement.
The positions that were available included openings in the colleges of Nursing, Education and Science and Technology. SGA notified students through Facebook, Twitter and numerous presidents of other student organizations. SGA President Branden Summers conducted interviews of over 30 students before making his selections.
“I like that they’re showing interest,” said Summers. “I want them to get involved and continue to be involved with SGA.”
Students who were not chosen for the senate have the opportunity to become members of committees. The General Membership Board is another option for students interested in becoming involved in SGA. All Southeastern students are eligible to be part of the board and attend meetings that will be conducted regularly as an open forum. Students are not required to attend all meetings, and absences will not hurt anyone’s ability to remain involved.
“We will let students say exactly what they don’t like, address the issues and inform them of what’s going on,” explained Summers. “So it’s kind of like them having an inside view of Southeastern SGA.”
Freshmen are also welcomed to be part of SGA through the Freshman Leadership Council (FLC). The council embodies three fundamental leadership values: scholarship, spirit and service. The program offers freshmen the opportunity to gain leadership skills, growth and development to build on during their career at Southeastern. Students interested in participation in the General Membership Board or FLC must fill out a form in the SGA office.
“It’s always good to get involved,” said Summers. “I stress that if anybody wants to get involved in SGA to just come in and fill out a form at the front desk. At SGA we’re not going to turn anyone down.”
For more information on SGA, visit their office located in room 207 of the Student Union. Office hours are Monday through Thursday 7:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Friday 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Students may also contact the SGA office at 985-549-2296 or [email protected].
