With Homecoming 2011 around the corner, the Student Government Association (SGA) and Dream Team, Southeastern’s student Homecoming committee, have been working hard to ensure that this year’s Homecoming will be just as enjoyable as the last.
William Takewell, Chief Justice of SGA, said that Dream Team was in charge of organizing and scheduling the events for Homecoming Week, Oct. 31 through Nov. 6, while SGA aided them in the finalization process.
“Dream Team is more about the planning of events and SGA is more about the behind the scenes,” said Takewell. “Dream Team makes sure that the organizations have a say in what’s being planned for Homecoming. We make sure that Dream Team gets everything turned in on time and sort of take charge of setting their plans in motion.”
According to Takewell, Dream Teams of the past began planning Homecoming as far back as the spring semester in order to have it prepared for the following fall semester. Takewell said this is the usual amount of time needed to have a schedule ready to go by the fall.
Beginning on Oct. 31, the week will be filled with activities and events celebrating the spirit of Southeastern such as Gumbo Ya-Ya and the Bonfire Pep-Rally, all leading up to the Homecoming game on Saturday Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. against Sam Houston State.
Throughout the week, there will be competitions among the student organizations sponsored by Dream Team like “Minute to Win It” on Nov. 1 and the Lip Sync contest on Nov. 3.
Takewell said that he hopes the competitiveness of the week will not distract students from having a good time or from experiencing the spirit that comes along with Homecoming.
“Luke Holloway, SGA President and Dream Team Chairman, and I were really focused on making it more about school spirit and less about competition,” said Takewell. “I know some people can get carried away with the competition aspect, but we want it to stay fun for everybody.”
Takewell said that they have added a few new events to the schedule this year, but that there will not be anything too different from past Homecomings.
“We added a few new things like the St. Jude Letter Writing Campaign where students can come to the union and write letters to help raise money for St. Jude’s Hospital,” said Takewell. “Other than that there is nothing really different.”
The letter writing campaign will take place on Wednesday Nov. 2 in the Student Union Ballroom at 6 p.m.
Takewell hopes students will have fun participating in the activities with their friends and will feel the excitement as they prepare to cheer on the Lions at the game.
