Campus Dining asks students for new cafeteria name

Auxiliary Services and Campus Dining are currently holding a contest to determine the name of the new cafeteria dining area that will be in the War Memorial Student Union addition.
“The naming contest is for the dining restaurant only, which will be located on the second floor of the new Student Union,” said Robin Parker, director of marketing and strategic initiatives with Auxiliary Services. “The thought was to provide students with an opportunity to have input into the name of the new facility.”
Anyone with a University ID number (W#) is able to submit an entry at www.surveymonkey.com/s/southeaternnamingcontest. This includes students, faculty and staff members. There are no limits on the number of entries a person can submit. The survey link will close on Sept. 15.
“Entries will be narrowed down to the top three to five entries by a committee comprised of students, faculty and staff,” said Parker. “Those entries will be posted on [the Campus Dining] Facebook during the week of Sept. 23, and students, faculty and staff will be encouraged to select their top choice from those options.”
The winner of the contest will be announced the week of Sept. 30 through Facebook.
“The winner will receive $100 in Cub Cash, which can be spent at any campus dining facility, including the two on-campus convenience stores and three coffee shops,” said Parker. “Thus far, approximately 75 entries have been received.”
The new facilities are scheduled to open in January of 2014. When the new facilities open, satellite operations including Chick-Fil-A and Quizno’s will remain open in their current locations. According to Parker, the university’s Facility Master Plan calls for the removal of the old Cayman Cafeteria building; however, there are no short-term uses currently planned.
In the new facilities, the cafeteria dining area will remain an all-you-care-to-eat facility that will feature a fresh food concept.
“This type of concept features chefs who prepare fresh, made-to-order meals from several action cooking stations in view of customers,” said Parker. “Customers will enjoy a variety of fresh, healthy food choices served in a fun, comfortable dining environment that will provide a restaurant-style experience on campus.”
The first floor food court will feature new retail dining locations such as Panda Express and Mooyah, a “Build Your Own Burger” concept, as well as Chick-Fil-A, Taco Bell and a Grab ‘N Go convenience store. Starbucks will remain in its current location as will Popeye’s and Subway.
