    RSW kicks off intramurals

Each semester Recreational Sports and Wellness offers several intramural sports for current students and alumni who meet certain requirements. During the spring semester basketball, softball and 7 vs. 7 outdoor soccer are being offered with outdoor soccer being the only change to spring intramurals this semester.
“7 vs. 7 outdoor soccer is the new addition for this semester,” said Chad Pendarvis, the assistant director of intramurals and special programs. “The only change made for this semester is the location for soccer. It is at North Oak Park.”
The intramural basketball jamboree took place last Tuesday in the Pennington Student Activity Center and put all currently signed-up teams against each other in a tournament. Although the deadline for basketball intramural team sign-ups was yesterday, students can still sign up for basketball as free agents if they pay the late fee. Intramural basketball is open to all current students.
“Those who are not current students must purchase a $10 guest pass through Intramural Sports Department,” said Pendarvis. “Guest passes must be ordered before noon and can be picked up before the game.”
Softball and soccer are currently accepting members through Feb. 24. Softball and soccer are open to current students. Alumni who have paid both alumni dues and gym membership are also eligible to compete. The registration fee per person for intramurals is $10. There is a $15 late fee for signing up after the season has begun.
Captain’s meetings for softball and soccer will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 19. Softball will take place at 7 p.m. and soccer will follow at 8 p.m. Meetings will be at the Pennington Center in room 107/108.
“Currently, there are over 30 teams signed up for basketball alone,” said Pendarvis. “Because we are still taking soccer and softball registrations, those numbers are inconclusive at the moment. We are expecting over 60 teams by the end of the season for all three sports [combined]. The numbers have steadily increased compared to the past semesters.”
Each semester, winning teams in certain sports have the opportunity to take their skills to the next level of intramurals with the Louisiana Collegiate Intramural Recreational Sports Association.
The Spring 2014 State Intramural Tournament and Conference will be held on April 25-27, 2014 at Louisiana Tech in Ruston, La.
“The winning teams for basketball and softball will be allowed to represent Southeastern at the LCIRSA state tournament,” said Pendarvis. “The state tournament will be hosted at Louisiana Tech this semester.”
