Though the unemployment rate for teenagers and young adults has skyrocketed in recent years, Career Services is working to increase resources for Southeastern students in the workforce by bringing a Summer Jobs and Internships Fair to campus.
The fair will take place Tuesday, April 15 outside of the new Student Union addition from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
“At the Summer Jobs and Internships Fair, students can network with area employers and make a face-to-face connection that will aid in their job search for summer employment,” said Brittany Bacques, assistant director of Career Services. “Those students looking for a great opportunity to gain real-world experience over the summer should certainly take some time to visit with these employers.”
The fair will host over 25 employers who are looking to hire people of all majors. Positions to be filled are part-time and internship positions. Though some positions will be available only for the duration of the summer, others will extend after the summer.
“The Summer Jobs and Internships Fair will provide students exposure to a wide range of employment opportunities,” said Bacques. “For instance, Chick-fil-A of Hammond is looking to hire an array of positions from team members to a marketing assistant. Representatives from Resource Bank, Louisiana Legislative Auditors, Laitraim LLC and First NBC Bank are all looking to hire interns for their organizations. These are just a few among many employment opportunities that will be offered to students.”
In order to leave potential employers with a positive impression, attendees should dress in business casual attire. Students should research companies of interest beforehand and come prepared with questions for employers.
“Prior to the job fair, students should look on our website for a list of employers that will be in attendance,” said Bacques. “The list will provide students with the name of each organization, a description of each organization, the type of position(s) they are seeking to fill and a list of majors of interest to each employer.”
Students should familiarize themselves with the information and formulate questions to create the opportunity to develop a constructive conversation or interaction with the employer(s) of interest. “Since many employers accept applications at the event, students should be prepared to complete and return them that day,” said Bacques. “While professional dress is not expected, students may want to dress at a minimum in slacks and a shirt/blouse.”
