Several places on campus provide a variety of free products for students. Many students struggle financially or place themselves on strict budgets, so they are always on the lookout for where they can get free stuff. The search ends now.
Throughout the year, the Student Government Association (SGA) provides students with pencils, different types of scantrons, blue testing booklets, water and coffee.
According to student workers in the SGA office, many students need scantrons on a regular basis and some tend to get them at the last minute on their way to class. Coffee is another reason most students and faculty commonly visit the office.
“It’s very convenient to just pop in, get what you need and head to class,” said senior business major Kevin Bartholomew. “Nobody wants to pay for scantrons when you have to take a test.”
The office is located in room 207 above the Student Union and is open from 7:30 to 5PM.
The Student Writing Center in D Vickers, located in Room 383, is another place to find free coffee, along with scheduled consultations to assist with English essays and reports. In addition to the Writing Center, the Center for Student Excellence (CSE) offers free tutoring in subjects such as math, chemistry and accounting, along with many others. Appointments are needed from Monday to Thursday and walk-ins are welcome on Friday. To make an appointment call the CSE at 985-549-3981.
Sims Memorial Library offers a telephone on its second floor for students to use as needed. Library rules do not allow anyone to use a cell phone past the first floor lobby, so this phone offers an extra convenience for students. Also, it can be used to call within the library for direct assistance or if a student has a question.
Students can get free health products on campus as well. Free condoms are available in the University Health Center, located directly behind the library. Students may walk in and get these free items at the front desk. Students with minor injuries may also receive free band-aids and alcohol wipes with the permission of a nurse or other attending physician.
The campus bookstore, located in the Student Union offers coupon books near the entrance doors.
“The coupon books are so useful,” said junior education major La’Shay Williams. “They’re coupons for Smoothie King and even free yogurt at Menchies, my favorite places.”
These coupon books provide many offers, deals and discounts for local Hammond businesses. It contains offers for restaurants, fast food places, automotive services and many other places often visited by students.
