Prospective students and their families gathered on campus to participate in Lion Pride Preview last Saturday for the purpose of touring and learning about Southeastern.
Lion Pride Preview is held twice every semester with the goal of educating prospective students about Southeastern’s academic programs, admissions process and campus life. The event featured an information browse, campus and housing tours, a general assembly, lunch and free admission to the Lady Lions basketball game.
“I was impressed by the size and how nice the campus was,” said Cole Brian, a senior at Central High School. “My favorite part was getting there and talking to the people at the booths.”
Brian plans to attend Southeastern in the fall to major in physics.
Lion Pride Preview is a newly established event that combines what has previously been split into Senior Day, Junior Day, Open House and Freshman Fair. This is the third semester that the combination event has been held.
“We liked the smallness of it and that it wasn’t far from home,” said Robin Nalesnik. “It was much bigger than I thought it would be and very nice!”
Several attendants commented on the size of the university. For many, a smaller school is preferable.
“We really enjoyed the tour, though my favorite part was the information session, then the lunch.” said Darby Heuer. “I loved the size of the campus and very clean. I also like the area surrounding the campus.”
Though overall enjoyment of the event was high, there were some suggestions for improvement.
“Personally, I thought the talk in Pottle Hall lasted too long while everyone was hungry for lunch,” said Sherri White. “That would be better received if it were cut a little shorter and done earlier in the day.”
While Southeastern hosts a well received preview day, competing universities approach their informational events with a few variations.
According to White, University of Louisiana at Lafayette (ULL) has a schedule of events which includes specific times for the different activities and allows guests to speak with the professors of various departments. The ULL attendants also receive T-shirts.
The Admissions in Enrollment Management, along with the Orientation Leaders, hosted this event at which over 800 people were in attendance.
The second and final Lion Pride Preview day for this semester will be held Saturday, March 31.
