    Picou bids farewell to crown

After a year of representing the university and promoting the American Cancer Society, Miss Southeastern says farewell.
An intimate gathering of family, friends and supporters came to celebrate Renee Picou, a junior biology major, and wish her well on her future endeavors. The ceremony was held Monday, Oct. 28 in the Student Union and featured a video highlighting Picou’s accomplishments and experiences throughout the year.
“I had a great time being able to promote my platform, the American Cancer Society, and get the word out about cancer,” said Picou. “My grandfather passed away with cancer, and I also had some close childhood friends who had cancer. Especially with the crown I was able to get a lot done.”
Todd McElroy, coordinator of the Campus Activities Board, congratulated Picou on a successful year and presented her with a bouquet of green and yellow roses.
“You’ve been a wonderful Miss Southeastern, and I’d like to thank you from everyone,” said McElroy.
Throughout her reign, Picou raised over $2,000 to donate to ACS, a nationwide health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer.
After graduation, Picou plans to go to medical school to pursue work in the field of dermatology. She expressed a soft spot for young girls with skin issues and wishes to help improve their self-esteem through skin care.
“I’m still struggling with my own complexion, and I’ve seen girls in junior high with the same problems,” said Picou. “It really helps their self-esteem if they have good skin. Plus I still want to find some good stuff for myself.”
In an interview Picou explained that her biggest challenge was speaking in front of large crowds. She has been able to overcome this obstacle throughout her time as Miss Southeastern and her experience at the Miss Louisiana pageant.
“Since I went on to Miss Louisiana last year, I’ve seen what an awesome program it is, being able to support your platform, raising money for the Children’s Miracle Network, building relationships with the girls there, keeping up with the healthy lifestyle, keeping up with my talent and learning how to speak in big groups and crowds,” said Picou. “It’s really helped me to be my best self.”
Picou will pass the crown to the next Miss Southeastern this Saturday following the pageant at 7 p.m. in Ralph R. Pottle Auditorium.
