    Vehicle registration goes online

The extensive vehicle registration process has been simplified for both students and the University Parking Office through online registration.
As of April 29, students are no longer required to fill out vehicle information in person before obtaining parking decals. The update will not only help students, but will also help cut costs of supplies and personnel for the parking office. The Parking Department and the Office of Technology collaborated to implement the improvement.
“Dr. Crain wanted to make the process easier and more accessible for the students. A lot of things are now online, and that’s what they’re shooting for,” said Kevin Knudsen, supervisor of daily operations of UPO. “I think the program is going to be really beneficial to the students as well as us.”
To complete vehicle registration online, students must log onto their LEONet account, go to Self Service, select Vehicle Registration and choose the semester term. Fill in the vehicle information and check “I agree” after reading the Financial Statement. The parking fee will automatically be added to the student’s LEONet account.
“This is going to help a lot of students because some of them forget to bring their registration when they come in to do their paperwork, and we couldn’t give them their decals,” said Knudsen. “If they forget their papers, they can just call someone and put the information in on computers that we’ll have for them to use.”
After filling in vehicle information on LEONet students can pick up decals in the Parking Office. For the fall semester, permits will be issued by the Parking Department at the University Center until after the second day of classes.
“We don’t have to file over $10,000 in cards. Plus when you’re looking at budget restraints, that’s fewer cards that we have to order,” said Knudsen. “We’re looking at saving money personnel-wise during the initial semester registration process as well.”
Knudsen discussed common student parking violations, saying the most frequent violation occurs when students park in no-parking zones.
“A lot of students end up receiving tickets because they don’t park in actual parking spaces,” said Knudsen. “A parking space has to have white lines on the driver and passenger sides as well as in the front, unless there’s a cement bumper. If those conditions aren’t met, then it is a no-parking zone.”
Another mistake Knudsen explained concerns a common misconception in vehicle identification requirements.
“Always make sure your vehicle has a Southeastern identification if it’s parked on campus any day of the week, even after 4 p.m.,” said Knudsen. “It’s just a safety precaution to identify all the vehicles parked on campus. We do make exceptions for special events on campus.”
Parking decals cost $45 if purchased in the fall and last through the summer semester. If purchased in the spring, decals cost $30 and $15 if purchased in the summer.
“We worked with the technology department, the controllers’ office and admissions to work on a plan to allow students to register their vehicles online,” said Knudsen. “I think the new process is wonderful. We’ve actually had a student come in who was registering for the summer and used the new registration, and they said it was easy.”
