The Students United in Pursuit of Educational Respect (SUPER) network, is now available for students via Facebook.
The network was designed and developed by the Student Government Association (SGA) to inform students about Southeastern’s budget situation.
The staff of The Lion’s Roar newspaper provided a list of 26 questions concerning the university’s possible financial plans, problems and solutions, and each was paired with an answer given by President John L. Crain.
The Lion’s Roar asked a variety of questions regarding the budget, some pertaining to past budget criteria, while others questioned possible future scenarios such as naming sponsorships of the university’s facilities had been considered to bring in additional revenue, for example Papa John’s Soccer Complex or Adidas University Center. According to Crain, this is a very real possibility and that some “are under development.”
The purpose of such questions is to inform students and dispel any rumors, such as misappropriation of funds.
“We want to make sure that we’re getting the facts to the students,” stated SGA president David Cavell in a Dec. 15 press release. “There were concerns about false rumors being spread in this budget situation and that was a major influence in our developing of the SUPER network.”
Executive Director of Public and Government Affairs Erin Cowser, who assisted the SGA in the creation of the network, believes it will allow students to become more aware of their school’s finances and spending.
“When students know about the facts of the budget situation, they can become more effective advocates for their university,” Cowser stated.
According to Cavell, the network will retain a question and answer format and will also be used to announce budget related events.
Cavell added that the network is intended to educate students so that they can show legislators, including the governor, that the students of Southeastern will hold them accountable for their actions regarding their decisions about higher education.
The SUPER Network can be accessed on Facebook where viewers are encouraged to read and comment upon the posts.
