Outreach project to help find dresses

Alpha Sigma Tau is bringing the Outreach Prom Project to Hammond, looking for donations of prom dresses and shoes for local high school girls.

Currently, the sorority has received 52 dresses and six pairs of shoes, all of which have been donated.  According to Rebecca Schnadelbach, vice president of Alpha Sigma Tau, Four Season’s Cleaners in Hammond is dry cleaning all of the dresses that are donated for free.

“We are also sending volunteers on April 13 and April 20 to help shop with each of the girls personally and help them pick out a dress that flatters them and will make them look and feel like the most beautiful girl at her prom,” said Schnadelbach. “Our girls are more than excited to help out with this event.”

A Hammond local, Schnadelbach graduated from Hammond High School and thinks that it is very important to give back to her community.

“I think that, because Hammond is a ‘college’ town, the organizations and groups should make a conscious effort to get involved right here at home, and that is what the co-founders of Outreach Prom Project, Elizabeth Durham and Rachael Rolling, had in mind when creating the event,” said Schnadelbach.  “They really want to spread the love of Christ and service with everyone in the community.  One of Alpha Sigma Tau’s core principles is service, and we strive each and every day to give back to the school community and surrounding area.”

According to Schnadelbach, other local businesses have donated free hair and make-up appointments as well as jewelry that will be raffled off at an event for the young women.

“I think this event, like many others that have been recently started, are helping build strong leaders and volunteers in our community,” said Schnadelbach.  “People are now realizing the need in our very own community, and they have been stepping up to take initiative of trying to do something about it.”

Donations can still be made until Friday, April 6.  Dresses may be dropped off at the Four Season’s Cleaners or at Nortech Downtown in Hammond.  If you are on campus, donations may be dropped off at the Alpha Sigma Tau house in Greek Village.  The dates of the events are April 13, 20 and 21.  If you would like to volunteer or find out more information, email [email protected].
