The Greek community started off its annual Greek Week with a bang, featuring a Volleyball Tournament, first ever Pie Eating Contest and annual Tug-o-War. There was also a BBQ, yard games, basketball, football, hanging out in the Village, listening to music and even some Greeks playing in kiddie pools.

Starting Sunday, March 22, the Greeks embraced a “Hunger Games” theme for their 2015 Greek Week. Different fraternities and sororities were placed in a district, representing the distinct districts in “The Hunger Games” series. Districts competed during the volleyball tournament.

In the first match, Alpha Omicron Pi, Kappa Sigma and Alpha Phi Alpha as District Seven versus Sigma Sigma Sigma and Kappa Alpha Order of District Five. District Seven won the match, advancing them in the tournament.

In the second match, Alpha Sigma Tau and Theta Chi, which made up District Three, versus Theta Phi Alpha, Theta Xi and Pi Kappa Alpha of District 4. District Three won the second match, allowing them to progress in the tournament.

Following the first and second match were four more matches. In the third match, District Seven versus Phi Mu, Delta Tau Delta and Zeta Phi Beta of District 13. District 13 won the match. In the fourth match District, Four versus District Seven, with a victory for District Seven. In the fifth match, District Three versus District Five, with a win for District Five. The sixth match was District Three versus District 13, with District Three coming out on top.

In between matches, Harli Manuel, junior communications major and member of Sigma Sigma Sigma, commented about the community of the teams in the Volleyball Tournament.

“I think it’s the first time you see the different organizations come together as a team and work together,” said Manuel.

At this point, District 13 versus District Seven and District Five versus District Three in the competition for the semi-finals. District Seven and District Five advanced in the competition, battling head-to-head in the finals, which would determine the first and second place winners. District Five finished with first place and District Seven finished with second place in the Tournament. Following the finals was the deciding match for third place where District 13 versus District Three, with a victory for District 13.

After the victory for District 13, Shelby Long, member of Phi Mu and District 13, commented on her victory for third place.

“It feels good to win and I’m proud of my team. I’m looking forward to the rest of the activities for the rest of the week,” said Long.

Following the Volleyball Tournament was the Pie Eating Contest as opposed to the usual cupcake eating contest. All of the members of the Greek organizations on campus gathered around the basketball court in Greek Village to watch members of the districts compete in the Pie Eating Contest. These members included: Justin Bankston, member of Kappa Alpha Order and District Five; David Nicoletti, member of Delta Tau Delta and District 13; Zachary Robin, member of Theta Chi and District Three; Hunter Miller, member of Theta Xi and District Four; and Philip Buriege, member of Kappa Sigma and District Seven.

In the contest, the district members were given five minutes to finish their pies and Bankston was the first to completely finish before time was called. The rest of the districts came close, therefore each pie will be weighed and the results for second and third place will be announced later in the week.

“It was pretty cool and exciting,” said Billy Pryor, Kappa Alpha Order member. “I would have like to see girls play.”

While setting up for the Tug-o-War, Justin Bankston, winner of the Pie Eating Contest, commented on how his day and Greek Week in general had been going so far and how he felt after the contest.

“It’s been great so far. The pie-eating contest was more than what I bargained for. I felt terrible [after], but it was worth it,” said Bankston.

To finish out the first day of Greek Week was the Tug-o-War. Various rounds of tug-o-war were held, some of which included District Five versus District 13. District Five finished in first place, District Seven finished in second place and District Three finished in third place.

Greek Week continued as the Sheet Sign Judging and Thinkfast took place on Monday. The Greek Games, Golden Silence and “The Hunger Games” movie screening will be tonight. The Greek Picture will be taken  Wednesday and the Step Show and Awards Ceremony will conclude Greek Week on Thursday.
