    Volleyball extends SLC win streak

The Lady Lions volleyball team dominated in the Southland Conference game against University of New Orleans Privateers Saturday, Oct. 2. They won three straight sets: 25-16, 25-8 and 25-19. This was their third SLC win, also contributing the 10th win to their overall record, now 10-16 (Southland record being 4-10).
“It feels awesome because we have been working on specific things like pushing over on our blocks and diving on the floor like being more fearless and hustling more and being more scrappy and getting crazy balls up, and I think that really showed through,” said senior defensive specialist Megan McMillin on the team’s big win.

Shelby Delvin, sophomore middle backer, kept her team’s energy high throughout the game. She contributed three total blocks during the matches against the UNO Privateers.
The team had to make sure their energy was high and they were focused in order to accomplish the victory against the opposing team.
“[We have to] make sure our energy is up and we come out strong,” said Delvin.
The game constantly had high energy and momentum with the Lady Lions taking control of both the attack and the defense.
The team totaled in 42 kills with freshman middle blocker Rachel Bunn leading with 10 kills (posting a .625 attacking percentage). Freshman outside hitter Parrie Hartley and junior outside hitter Elizabeth Ramee contributed to the total of 13 kills Hartley delivering eight kills while Ramee delivered six. Also, sophomore setter Mikayla Shippy made 33 assists, providing aid in the team’s offensive attack. The Lady Lions recorded a .293 attack percentage, holding the Privateers to a -.28 as a team.
“Volleyball’s completely a game of momentum and errors, and the team that makes the less errors wins. And, the team who has the most momentum can come out and dominate any team any day,” said McMillin.
Head coach Jim Smoot was thrilled with the team’s win since they have been working very hard to come through with a victory in SLC play.
“I was really excited because I saw all the things we have been working on the past two weeks come through,” Smoot said.
In preparation for the game, changes were mainly enforced on the defensive end. Smoot chose to bring the back center up, contributing greatly to the team’s counterattack, which took advantage of the other’s team lateness to respond.

The Lady Lions are now in their last two weeks of their season, having four matches left to establish a spot in the SLC Tournament. They will have to win just about all of them in order to proceed to the tournament. The next home game will be on Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. against Jackson State.
