Lady Lions hold on to first place in SLC

The Lady Lions tennis team remains in first place in the Southland Conference following a 4-3 victory against Sam Houston State University.
On Saturday, the home game kicked off with the Lions scoring the first point in doubles matches, winning two of the three matches.
Senior Isabel Brito won the clinching match on court No. 6 for the singles matches, facing Nadia Dubyanskaya.
“Personally this victory means a lot to me since I got the last point, and also my doubles match was crucial,” said Brito. “This is my last season and every victory is important, but yesterday was a tough one that I will never forget. It gave us the chance to keep fighting for the first place in the conference.”
Saturday’s win brought the team to 15-2 overall and 5-1 in conference, despite a 5-2 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday.
“We lost against Texas A&M. They’re a good team, probably the top team in the conference,” said Jason Hayes, head coach. “You can’t make mistakes against them, and we made too many.”
The Lady Lions won the doubles matches on courts No. 2 and 3, with Brito and freshmen Reginka Nychytailova outlasting Sam Houston State players for the point in No. 3.
Scores evened out during the singles matches with the opponents winning in courts 1, 2 and 5. However, the Lions came out on top, winning the matches in courts 3, 4 and 6.
“Sam Houston is a good team, and we had to come up with some big shots to help us win. That’s the way we do it. We fight, and that’s the difference,” said Hayes.  “I think the girls are motivated, and they’re going to work hard.”
