Lions fall in closely matched game

The Lions basketball team maintained an intense back-and-forth game versus Southeast Missouri State, yet ultimately saw defeat by a single point.
The game versus Southeast Missouri took place Saturday, Dec. 7, ending with a score of 74-73.
The first half of the game ended with the Lions in the lead, 39-32. The second half played to Southeast Missouri’s favor, however, with the two teams playing neck in neck, allowing for an unpredictable conclusion.
“It’s a disappointing loss,” said head coach Jim Yarbrough. “Tough way to lose at home. I thought we bounced back really well from the tough road trip. After Thanksgiving they came home and did a great job and played pretty well. We obviously didn’t play perfect down the stretch, but we did a really nice job. We had a chance to win it, but some of the good things that you did today, you’d feel a lot better about if you could walk out with a W and smiles, and everybody feels a little bit more confident, but sometimes when that doesn’t happen you feel a little bit more despair. I feel that we have to work through that, get ready for exams and get ready to move on to Mississippi State.
Freshman guard Joshua Filmore felt that one of the factors contributing to the loss was problems with the offense.
“It was a tough game. We were just going back and forth mostly the entire game. It was a hard fought game. They just came out on top,” said Filmore. “[Next game, we need to] come out with the same intensity. We have to execute our offense and still play tough defense.”
Senior guard Dre Evans attributed the loss not to a particular fault in game play, but to the well-matched game.
“It was a tough loss,” said Evans. “We played hard, we fought hard, just tough overall. We didn’t get a couple of calls down the stretch that I feel like we could’ve got, but I mean overall they just came and put more points on the board. I think we need to keep the intensity, keep the energy, keep playing smart, tough and together, and we’ll be all right.”
The Lions will be traveling to Tupelo, Miss. on Friday, Dec. 13 to face off against Mississippi State.
