Lions deliver good results at LSU Relays

All-American senior Kovey Simmons claimed the number two spot on the list of best college pole-vaulters in the country on the second day of the 2012 LSU Relays last Saturday.

Simmons broke the Southeastern record in the men’s pole vault with a mark of 17-5 feet early, and tried for the number one national spot of 17-9. While he couldn’t quite make it that high, Simmons still took first place in the relay’s men’s pole vaulting competition and was more than happy to take the national second spot.

“It feels really great now, but it’s still early in the season. Someone could break it next week,” said Simmons. “When I was going after that 17-9, I felt a lot of pressure. But I’ve been relaxed all day and I do my best when I’m relaxed, so I just kept my head together.”

In the women’s pole vault, junior Brittany Pfantz placed third overall, recording a 12-5 foot jump.

Southeastern’s athletes also performed well in both the men and women’s 4×400-meter relay. The men’s team of T.J. Herbert, Shaq Windley, Brendon Mitchell and Abram Taylor ran a time of 3 minutes, 15.34 seconds, placing eighth in the finals. The Lady Lion team of C’Arra Watts, Tamra Grayson, Keisha Celestine and Alicia Noel turned in the fourth-best performance in school history (3:52.42). The Lady Lions placed sixth overall.

Senior Michelle Ogashi also made her mark on school history by finishing third in the women’s triple jump and turning in the third-best performance in Southeastern history by jumping 40 feet, 10.5 inches.

Other notable performances included a pair of fifth-place overall finishes for Abram Taylor in the men’s 110-meter hurdles (14.98 seconds) and Derek Hampton in the men’s javelin throw (198-7).

“I was expecting a lot more, but I feel blessed to just come out here and throw,” said Hampton. “I think my better throws were my first; my first throws have a tendency to be better than my later ones.”

The Lions Track and Field teams will compete at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin on Wednesday. The meet will conclude on Saturday, March 31.
