Softball faces Lamar Cardinals after 11 cancelled games

After dropping the first two games of the series, the Lady Lions softball team managed to come back for a 3-2 win against the Lamar Lady Cardinals. The series was the first Southland Conference play for the Lady Lions, who now have a 1-2 conference record and a 4-7 overall record for the 2014 season.
“We’re trying to play five new players in the line-up this year, and it had rained out 11 games before this weekend,” said Head Coach Pete Langlois. “It’s kind of affecting our maturity.”
In Friday’s game, the Lady Lions gave the Lady Cardinals their first win, 6-4. The following day the Lady Lions lost the game, 8-1, after a two-run home run by the Cardinals who gave them an early advantage. Sunday, the team rallied and came together in the series finale for their first Southland Conference win of the season, 3-2.
“Today’s game was a very emotional, exciting game for both teams,” said Langlois after the Lions’ win on Sunday. “In the last inning, different from yesterday’s game, we got the break during the last inning of the game. Yesterday, Lamar got the break, got the game-winning home run. Today we caught the game-saving fly ball and tagged them out at third.”
Junior pitcher Tori Stamper earned her second win by striking out six Lady Cardinals and giving up no earned runs during the five innings she pitched.
“I’d say Tori Stanford was our most exciting player today being able to hold them because they got so many home runs yesterday,” said Langlois.
Sophomore pitcher Taylor Bishop came in and pitched for the last two innings, earning her first save of the season.
Despite the two conference losses, Langlois feels the team is in a decent place to start conference play. He views the Lady Lions’ first conference positively considering they held off Lamar from a sweep.
“I would say we’re OK with that,” said Langlois. “It’s better than getting swept. Maybe if we had a little more experience under our belt, we might have been able to pull off a win yesterday in that game that we lost in that last inning, but anything’s better than getting swept.”
Langlois said that he expects the season will be tough, but he also expects to see improvement from the Lady Lions as they see more time on the field.
“Every time you play, anybody could beat anybody in our league,” said Langlois. “Like yesterday, you’ve got to make all the plays and capitalize on all the mistakes the other team makes. It’s going to be a tough season for all of us, Lamar included. It’s an evenly matched season.”
The Lady Lions will return home for the non-conference play this Wednesday at 6 p.m. versus the Southern University Lady Jaguars at North Oak Park. For additional information on the Lady Lions softball season, go to www.lionsports.net.
