Lady Lions drop first home loss against Ragin’ Cajuns, start conference 0-2

The Lady Lions’ woes continued into conference play last week with losses coming against the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, Lamar University and McNeese State University.

On Tuesday, Sept. 20, the Lady Lions faced off against the ULL Ragin’ Cajuns in the University Center. The Ragin’ Cajuns took a commanding lead before winning the first set, fueled by three consecutive service aces by sophomore outside hitter Taylor Meade. The Lady Lions managed to close the distance to a 15-20 score, but sophomore defensive specialist Kristen Armstrong finished the set with four consecutive points.

After dropping the second set 18-23, Lady Lions head coach Geno Frugoli attempted to motivate his team.

“He told us we’d done it before, and that this team’s beatable,” said junior middle blocker Courtney Donald.

After starting off the set sluggishly, the Lady Lions quickly knotted things up at 12, before taking the lead 14-12. The Ragin’ Cajuns came back to tie the score at 16, before taking the lead, which they did not relinquish.

Freshman outside hitter Elizabeth Ramee took top honors with 11 kills, while sophomore setter Lindsey Young posted a double -double with 13 digs and 26 assists.

“Elizabeth has been starting the last four or five matches for us and really heating it up, but as a freshman she’s starting to get more and more confidence, and she’s hitting the ball smarter and harder,” said Frugoli.

The Lady Lions took their efforts on the road on Thursday, Sept. 22, when they faced the Lamar Lady Cardinals to open up conference play. The Lady Lions managed to take the second set but dropped the third and fourth, giving the win to Lamar. Donald led the team with a season high 15 kills, while sophomore middle blocker Kinsey Williams added 11. Sophomore libero Megan McMillin contributed 12 digs.

On Saturday, Sept. 24, the Lady Lions continued their mini road trip to McNeese State. The Cowgirls finished the match in three sets, 27-25, 25-21, and 25-20. Donald and Williams combined for 23 kills, while senior middle blocker Paige Dollison added eight kills and four blocks. McMillin added 12 digs, while senior setter Arianne Cruckshank garnered 11.

The Lady Lions open their first conference home game against Northwestern State on Thursday, Sept. 29. Despite the recent losing streak, Frugoli and his team are confident they can win.

“Northwestern’s been playing better this year, and it’s going to be another tough contest, but we’ll feed off the crowd,” said Frugoli.
