Lion baseball sweeps UNO weekend series

Southeastern took a share of the Southland Conference standings this past weekend when they swept the University of New Orleans Privateers. The opening and closing games of the series were hosted by UNO while game two was played at Pat Kennelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

The series was moved back a day to allow the players time off on Easter Sunday.

Game one was played Thursday night and featured the Privateers scoring runs early. It seemed as if the Lions were in for a long night after UNO were up 3-0 after three innings. Southeastern began their comeback in the top of the fourth with a run scored by Jameson Fisher off of a single by Brett Hoffman. The Lions tacked on another run in the fourth to bring them within one. It was the fifth inning where men in green would take the game over. Breaking out with six runs off of seven hits gave Southeastern the lead. Sean Kennel earned the win to advance to 4-2 this season and the Lions took the series opener 10-3 over the Privateers.

Andro Cutura got the start on the mound for Southeastern in the second game of the series. The junior right-hander entered the contest without letting up a run in 26.1 innings and continued his streak of impressive performances against UNO. Although he saw his scoreless streak end, Cutura pitched a complete game and earned the win to bring his record to 7-1 thus far this season.

“I just tried to pound the strike zone,” said Cutura. “I knew once we got the lead, I had to keep it at zeroes for the rest of the game.”

Both teams looked to lock down on defense in Friday’s matchup. New Orleans got on the board first after Zach Reboulet scored for the Privateers. The Lions followed up with two runs of their own in the fourth inning. It was the last runs to be scored as the Lions would prevent UNO from scoring again Friday evening and took the victory at home 2-1.

“Andro did a great job at keeping up where we needed to be all night,” said Head Coach Matt Riser. “We knew it was going to grinder from the start and our guys found a way to get one more run than they did.”

Southeastern looked to get their first sweep of a conference opponent Saturday afternoon and they did just that. As in the prior two games, UNO got on the board first. The Privateers earned a run in the second, but did not have the lead for long. Southeastern followed up with three runs of their own in the third following a three-run homer from Andrew Godbold. The homerun was the fifth of the year for Godbold, who leads the team in homeruns this season. Tate Scioneaux and Mason Klotz held off the Privateers for the remainder of the game to give Southeastern the 5-3 victory.

The sweep of UNO put the Lions on a five-game win streak heading into a trip to Mississippi to take on Jackson State Tuesday night. Following will be an away series against Sam Houston State.
