Lions prepare to open season on the road against SEC newcomer Missouri

The wait for new head coach Ron Roberts debut has been greatly anticipated and this Saturday their wait will be over. The Lions will open game one of the regular season versus SEC newcomer Missouri Tigers in Columbia, Missouri.
“It’s here, we’re excited, our guys are excited,” said Roberts. “We have a chance to come in this week now into a game week prepared and the guys ready to roll.”
The Lions enter the week wrapping up fall camp over the weekend and headed into this week focused on Missouri. Quarterback Nathan Stanley has made significant progress throughout fall camp as he completed 16 of 24 passes in the Lions last scrimmage before the season opener. Stanley is a transfer from an SEC school and the 6-foot 5-inch senior quarterback is looking forward to going into the competitive environment.
“I’m excited. I came from Ole Miss. I’ve play in those big giant stadiums,” said Stanley. “It’s going to be good for us to go and play in front of 50 plus thousand people.”
Unlike Stanley, this is the first time many of his teammates will be in an environment like Missouri. Roberts still has a few things he wants to emphasize to his team during this week of preparation.
“Across the board it’s the same thing just trying to eliminate mental mistakes,” said Roberts. “I’m pleased with where we’re headed.”
The Lions held an afternoon practice last Saturday to close out fall camp and Roberts came away pleased with his guys, saying that it was the best afternoon practice to date.
“By far it was the best afternoon practice we’ve had,” said Roberts. “We’re getting better. I know we still have a week and a half to go and we need it, but today was the best we’ve looked as a football team.”
Southeastern heads into the match returning 21 starters and 50 players with game experience, but only a few of them have ever experienced the environment and competition that the Tigers will present on Sept. 1 at Memorial Stadium. Despite the odds, some Lions players are rising to the challenge and not shying away from the spotlight.
Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. central time on Saturday. For more information on game day, tickets and travel visit www.lionsports.net.
