Lions dominate in final game of Colonel series

Though the first two games of the series last weekend yielded inconsistent results, the Lions baseball team thrashed Nicholls University in the final series game.
The series took place Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Lions won the first round 4-2, but fell to Nicholls in the second game 3-5. The final game ended victoriously with the Lions scoring runs in each inning, leaving Nicholls with a 15-0 defeat.
“It was a great game,” said sophomore catcher/infielder Jameson Fisher, who scored three runs. “We had that loss last night. We did some things we weren’t very proud of. We didn’t take advantage of some opportunities, but we came out today, especially in the first innings. We had the three-round punch, and it just kept on pouring on. It was awesome.”
The bulk of the runs were made in the first three innings. The Lions scored fourth in the first inning, three in the second and four in the third. A run was made in the fourth and sixth, and two runs were scored in the fifth. Fisher, Jacob Seward, Andrew Godbold, Brett Hoffman, Kennon Menard, Kyle Cedotal and Jacob Williams all contributed to the scoreboard throughout the game. Junior pitcher Andro Cutura allowed only one hit throughout the entire five-inning game. The team was overjoyed at taking down Nicholls, who was first place in the Southland Conference.
“Those are the guys that we’re supposed to beat, and we know that,” said Fisher. “We’re supposed to try to rule the state. We came out today to try to prove a point. They were at first place, and we know that we’re supposed to be up there at first place, not those guys. We were trying to prove something today.”
Head Coach Matt Riser attributed the shift in gears throughout the series to the team’s mentality.
“The right mentality’s been there all week,” said Riser. “We’ve had some tight situations and some tough games in the last two weeks… But, I felt this week we competed 10 times better than we did last week. We got the mindset in the right direction, and I told them, ‘Honestly, it doesn’t matter who we play. You’re playing the top team in the conference, and you won 15 to nothing because you played the right way.’ It doesn’t matter which opponent is in the dugout, as long as we take care of business and play our style of baseball, we can beat anybody.”
The Lions will face Tulane University in New Orleans on Tuesday, May 6 at 6:30 p.m. The next home game will be the first of the series versus Northwestern State on Thursday, May 15 at 6 p.m.
