Lions drop conference series at the Pat

Southeastern was unable to come out on top in a weekend series against conference foe Houston Baptist University, losing two out of three games. The Lions lost the final two games of the series after dominating in the opener 13-6.
The final game of the series was held on March 30 with the doubleheader having been played the day prior. Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field featured ideal weather for all three games during the weekend. Houston Baptist University was leading the conference in hitting entering the series. HBU averaged about six runs over the three for the majority of the series.
The Lions began the series on a high note with a win in the first game of the doubleheader. A grand slam from junior outfielder Andrew Godbold was undoubtedly the highlight of the game and marks only the second homerun of Godbold’s career. Head Coach Matt Riser had a simple explanation for the Lion’s success in the opener.
“We just showed up. It’s plain and simple,” said Riser.
The Lions were challenged by HBU’s offense at the start of the game and were not able to get anything going at bat and were eventually shut out in a 6-0 loss. The start of the second game saw the beginning of a 18-inning streak that saw Southeastern only bring one run home.
Sunday brought about the anticipated rubber match between the two clubs. After the three scoreless innings from both teams, the Huskies would break loose and put up four runs in the fourth inning. The score would reach 6-0 before Southeastern answered back with a run of their own in the seventh. It was too late by then since HBU scored once more in the eighth to bring their lead back up to six and the Lions were unable to muster a comeback. Junior pitcher Kyle Keller would be credited with the loss to bring him to 2-2 on the season.
“We definitely did not come out here with the energy and the focus that we wanted,” said sophomore catcher Jameson Fisher.
Coach Riser had similar comments about the loss.
“They wanted it more than we did,” said Riser.
Southeastern wraps up their streak of games at home with two more midweek, non-conference matchups before leaving for a weekend series. Tuesday night the Lions will host South Alabama and Wednesday will spotlight a game against Alcorn State. Coach Riser hopes to bounce back from the losses in the upcoming games in order to be ready for the conference series ahead.
“It’s real simple. We have to find a way to get back on track and be a bit more consistent,” said Riser.
A Southland Conference series against Central Arkansas University will cap off the week for Southeastern. For more information on tickets regarding home games, go to LionSports.net or call 985-549-5466.
