Lion golf prepares for SLC tournament

Coming off of a season in which they were able to take the conference title, the Southeastern golf team had high aspirations for this year and a strong fall for the Lions had the season looking up. However, the spring has not been as kind to Coach Tim Baldwin and the team.
One of the highlights from the fall half of the season saw Southeastern have success in advancing up the rankings. At one point, the Lions would be rank as high as no. 28 in the nation. Sophomore Lawrence Allan recalls his most special memory from the first half of the season thus far.
“Winning the tournament at LSU has been the highlight for me this season,” said Allan. He is speaking of the David Toms Tournament in which the Lions won soundly.
Southeastern most recently competed in the UTSA/Lone Star Invitational in San Antonio and played fairly well. After strong performances from Allan and junior Grady Brame, the Lions were able to take third in the tournament and place ahead of other top teams in the nation such as Purdue.
“Last weekend, we played very well, from tee to green,” said Allan on the spectacular play from the Lions at the UTSA/Lone Star Invitational.
    Baldwin shared Allan’s positive view.
“There were a lot of good rounds this week. I was especially pleased with the team starting very well,” said Baldwin.
The Lions were primed to win the tournament, but due to some late mistakes, they would have to settle for third place. Now in the homestretch of the season, Southeastern hopes this is a sign of greener greens to come. With only two tournaments left until the Southland Conference Championships, now is the time to start shaping up for a deep run into the post-season.
“This has been the first real sign that things are headed back in the right direction. It couldn’t come at a better time. We have two SEC golf tournaments coming up and leading into conference so I think we have a chance to finish on a good note,” said Baldwin.
The NCAA (National College Athletics Association) Regionals are the ultimate goal for the Lions. Only the top 65 teams in the nation earn the automatic bid as well as any team that wins their conference.
With solid competition on the way, there is no doubt that Southeastern is in a terrific spot to propel themselves in the rankings once more. The Lions stand at no. 63 in the nation according to the latest Golf Stat rankings. Certainly Baldwin would like distance the team away from that border of entering the NCAA regionals and ending the season early.
The team could do just that by putting on another solid weekend of play in the next few tournaments. Whatever spot Southeastern ends up being ranked, the defending Southland Champions will put their all into every drive, chip and putt that lies ahead of them.
