    Lions edge out Texas A&M-CC

Southeastern’s baseball team was able to capture two wins over Southland Conference opponent Texas A&M-Corpus Christi this past weekend, but dropped the Sunday game to the Islanders.
A five-game win streak for the Lions, which saw them defeat Head Coach Matt Riser’s alma mater Tulane, was snapped with the Sunday loss in Corpus Christi. Southeastern won Friday night’s game with a score of 5-3, and defeated the Islanders once more Saturday afternoon in a closely contested game that ended 4-2 for the Lions.
Friday night started the series off with an excellent game of baseball from both squads. Scoring would start early with runs coming at the top and bottom of the inning. Defense picked up as the team became settled in. Momentum changed in the Lions’ favor in the top of the fifth when the Lions were able to snag a pair of runs. It was a relatively quiet game from that point on thanks to excellent pitching from both sides. Junior pitcher Andro Cutura would earn the win for the game to advance to 3-1 this season. Relief pitchers Matt Pittari and Mason Klotz would come into the game and pitch scoreless innings to secure the win for the Lions.
“We found a way to win even when things didn’t go our way. We didn’t have the best of performances but at the end of the day we just found a way to edge out the ‘W’,” said Klotz in reference to the win Friday night.
The Lions had a little something more to play for come Saturday’s game. Thanks to their victory the night prior and a loss from Sam Houston State, Southeastern found themselves sharing the top spot in the conference.  Defense was solid throughout the game. Neither team scored until the seventh inning when the Lions put up two runs on four consecutive singles and an error on AMCC’s part. Although the Islanders responded with two runs of their own in the eighth, the Lions would not let the game stay tied for long. The Lions put away another pair of runs in the ninth and silenced AMCC to win the game 4-2. Tate Scioneaux earned his fifth win of the season to keep a perfect 5-0 record while Andrew Godbold was able to increase his hitting streak to 10 games.
“We did a good job of being tougher than the other team,” said Riser. “We stuck it out and came out with a win.”
Good times came to an end Sunday for the Lions. After winning the previous two games of the series, Southeastern did not complete the sweep with an 11-3 loss to the AMCC. Defense was the downfall of the Lions Sunday evening. They recorded a school-record tying eight errors. Coincidently, of the 11 runs scored by the Islanders, eight were unearned.
“We did not play defense well at all. When you commit eight errors, it will be real tough to win the game,” said Riser.
Through all three runs, the Lions hit well Sunday. The series finale saw Jacob Seward have his second consecutive three-hit game as well as Godbold extend his hitting streak to an impressive eleven games.
The Lions return home Tuesday, March 25 to face Jackson State at 6 p.m. They next see conference play this weekend in a series at home against Houston Baptist University.
