Lady Lions dominate against Lady Privateers

The Lady Lions basketball team thrashed their opponents, the University of New Orleans Privateers, in a game leaving five Lady Lions with double figure scores.
The game took place Thursday, Jan. 30 in the University Center, marking the team’s record with an 84-55 win in the Southland Conference.
“I thought that the second half of [the] basketball [game] was what we needed to do the first half,” said Head Coach Lori Jones on her team’s performance. “I thought we started to do it, and then we let UNO back in the game and let them get excited about the things that were going on [in the game]. In the second half, we had to push the lead and maintain control of the game, and I thought we did that in the second half.”
Five players contributed to the win by finishing in double figures. These players included sophomore forward Nanna Pool (21 points), junior guard Annessa De La Cruz (17 points), junior guard Symone Miller (17 points), junior guard Elizabeth Styles (15 points) and sophomore guard Erica Hernandez (10 points).
“We had five people in double figures,” said Jones. “That’s what you look for. You look for everybody to be productive without anybody having to force something down anybody’s throat.”
According to Symone Miller, the team practiced consistently despite the icy weather conditions that led to the university’s cancellation for several days.
“We practiced every day,” said Miller. “No breaks. It all paid off.”
With this victory under their belts, the Lady Lions are preparing for their games against the University of Central Arkansas and Oral Roberts University.
“We’ve got to go a long way and go find some wins,” said Jones. “We’ve got to go all the way to Arkansas and Oral Roberts. Arkansas is the lead in the league right now, and that’s going to be a big fight. Hopefully we can go steal some on the road. It’s going to be a challenge. We’ve got to go find some road wins because we’ve dropped a home win here.”
The Lady Lions will travel to Conway, Ark. to face UCA on Thursday, Feb. 6. They will then travel to Tulsa, Okla. for their game versus Oral Roberts on Saturday, Feb. 8.
The next Lady Lions home game will take place Thursday, Feb. 13 at 5 p.m. in the University Center against McNeese State University.
A match which formerly scheduled against Abilene Christian originally scheduled to be played Jan. 11 has been rescheduled to take place on Mar. 3 at 1 p.m. This match will be the Lady Lions’ final home appearance.
