Lady Lions find one win in road series

With more than half of the team’s losses coming on the road, Southeastern continued their struggles away from Hammond.
The Lady Lions took to the Nicholls Colonel Softball Complex with no advantage given the two losses in the first two games of the series. The softball team faced the third as a chance to do better, starting off the game with a solid four runs while keeping the Lady Colonels at bay until the fourth inning.
“You got to hit it in, and every time you don’t hit it in, you’re not going to win,” said Head Coach Pete Langlois. “You just got to shake it off and get back out there to battle. If there’s an opportunity to win today’s game, then you need to do it.”
Although the Lady Colonels were able to tie up the game in the fourth inning, sophomore outfielder Amanda Livaudais made it home and sealed a 5-4 victory for the Lady Lions in the Sunday game of the Southland Conference weekend series.
On Saturday, April 12 the Lady Lions faced two back-to-back losses at Nicholls, 4-6 and 0-8, which gave Nicholls the overall series win.
“In our first game, we left 13 people on base,” said Langlois. “We had an opportunity to outscore them, but we didn’t.”
Southeastern nearly rallied in the first game, but fell short. Sophomore outfielder Katie Lacour, junior second baseman Vanessa Eng, senior shortstop Megan McCollum, senior outfielder Jessie Browne and senior first baseman Tori Sheppard. Each contributed two hits for the Lady Lions, but few managed to complete a run. In the second game, Lady Colonels sophomore pitcher Hannah Haydel held back the Lady Lions offense with only junior third baseman Megan Moore managing a hit. This led to an 0-8 mercy ruling in favor of the Lady Colonels.
“In the second game, we kind of matched up our number two pitcher against their number one, and their number one pitcher beat us pretty good, threw a one-hitter,” said Langlois. “The game that should have been won was the first game, and you can’t win if you leave 13 people on base.”
Langlois attributed Sunday’s win to being evenly matched up, and the Lady Lions managed to rise to the occasion and score more runs early in the game to get a lead on the Colonels.
“We scored early and then we hung on,” said Langlois. “They tied it up. In the sixth and seventh innings we had an opportunity to hit in the winning run, and we did. We had two opportunities, and we didn’t get the winning run in the sixth inning, but we knocked it in the seventh inning. You got to always be available when the time comes.”
Despite losing the double header, Langlois noted several standouts who stepped up over the course of the weekend series. According to Langlois, Browne had a good weekend at the plate. Livaudais made a big catch out in right field. In the Sunday game, Langlois noted the positive Lady Lions pitching effort between senior Rachael Hellyer and junior Spencer Adkinson.
According to Langlois, the weekend series losses at Nicholls were disappointing because he had higher expectations for the conference play.
“We were going over counting on two wins, and we had the opportunity to get two wins, but we didn’t,” said Langlois. “We kind of dug ourselves a deep hole, and we’re going to try to play our way out of it this upcoming week.”
The weekend competition brought the Lady Lions to 15-21 overall and 7-11 in conference play. Southeastern will host Stephen F. Austin in a three-game series on April 18-19.
