The Lions baseball team (25-13) defeated the University of New Orleans Privateers (6-32) on Tuesday, April 16 at 6 p.m. with a 7-2 victory.
The Lions started out strong with one run in the first inning and two runs in the second. The defense shut out UNO, disallowing them to score a run until the sixth inning.
Freshman Jameson Fisher brought three more runs in the fourth with his third home run this season, leaving the Lions 7-0 until the sixth.
“It was a pretty good game,” said Fisher. “We’ve got a lot of pitchers who came out there and got some work in. They looked pretty good.”
The Lion’s offense brought the power to the plate until the bottom of the sixth, where the team only achieved one hit.
“Our offense started good early,” said Fisher, “but it kind of slacked off at the end, but we were able to hang onto the win.”
The Lions had fourteen hits overall, and the offense was a challenge to overcome.
“It was a good win, and we swung it pretty well with 14 hits, so that’s pretty good,” said junior third baseman Jesse Buratt. “We play Stephen F. Austin this weekend. They are a pretty good team, so we’re going to have to play hard and grind out some wins.”
Ultimately it was the five men on the mound who solidified this victory, as their pitches gave UNO only two runs throughout the game.
“I think the guys did a great job,” said head coach Jay Artigues. “Jordan Hymel was great on the mound tonight. We pitched very aggressively and that was the big difference in the game.”
The Lions are still ranked first in the Southland Conference. UNO will join this conference on July 1.
