    Roberson ties for school record

The Lions redeemed themselves from a fallen series in a fierce match in which junior catcher Sam Roberson tied a school record with five runs.

The game versus Alcorn State took place Wednesday, April 2 at the Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field, ending in a score of 20-4.

Last weekend, the Lions dropped two of three games to Houston Baptist, a series that started with a bang and ended with a sizzle. Things began to look up for the Lions, in the 9-3 win over South Alabama on Tuesday night. Things went from good to great Wednesday night when the Lions scored runs in every inning except the third and seventh, cranking out six runs in the fifth and five runs in the eighth in their most significant offensive achievements in the game.

“We did a good job of getting base runners,” said Head Coach Matt Riser. “We took our HBPs and we took our walks and we got our pitches. We didn’t miss it. When you do that, it starts getting guys on base… We had some big situations that allowed us to expand the score there.”

Roberson was a key player in the victory, tying a school record of five runs. Chris Finley in 1992 and Adrian Newell in 1998 were the only other Lions baseball players to achieve five runs within a single game.

“I thought we did a good job coming after the big win against South Alabama,” said Roberson. “We let the momentum take us and just kept on going the whole game, didn’t let up. It was a good sign; definitely a good sign.”

Additionally, Roberson scored his first home run of the season, and freshman infielder Kennon Menard scored the first home run of his career.

The Lions’ next game will offer challenges, yet Riser is determined with the memory of last year’s championship on his mind.

“Big weekend,” said Riser. “To be honest with you, I’ve been looking forward to this weekend for a long time ever since last year’s championship game. That memory sticks in my mind, and I know it does for the rest of the guys returning that were there last year. Obviously, we’re going to go out and give it our best and see if we can take a series with Conway.”

The series versus Central Arkansas will take place April 4-6 in Conway, Arkansas.
