Lady Lions named to All-Louisiana team

The Lady Lions softball team finished the 2012-2013 season on a high note. Five players were recognized for their hard work and athletic talents by being placed on the Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-Louisiana Collegiate Softball Team.
Each year the LSWA  choose the best players for each position, looking at all the divisions and which student-athletes excelled the most throughout the season.
Senior outfielders Kelsey Nichols and Michelle Duhe, freshman outfielder Katie Lacour, sophomore third baseman Megan Moore and freshman designated player Amber Sather were all honored, in addition to being chosen for the All-Southland Conference team.
Not only are the athletes chosen for their numbers and statistics, but according to Head Coach Pete Langlois the judges look at how each girl helps team morale and her leadership qualities.
“We know her competitive edge,” said Langlois, “but was she a team leader? Was she the one huddling up, or head first sliding into second base? They’re looking at situations where they stand out or draw attention to you, other than the fact that they’ve got really good numbers.”
The awards come hand in hand with a strong team. For the first time since 2008, the Lady Lions went to the Southland Conference Softball Tournament in Natchitoches and the season ended with a 32-22 record.
Nichols played her final season with the Lady Lions this year. This is the second time she has been recognized for outstanding achievements on the field and behind the plate. Nichols credits her coach and teammates for her success.
“It was an honor to be selected to the All-Louisiana team for the second time,” said Nichols. “It was great to see all the hard work that I put in over the last four years pay off. I know I would not have been as successful as I was without my teammates. If they had not been on base, I would not of had as many RBIs as I did, and if they weren’t willing to go in and hit extra every night with me, there is no way I would have had a successful senior season.”
Langlois describes Nichols as a solid, memorable player, and though she is “about five foot, she drew attention to herself because her playing was way bigger than her physicality. She played big for a little athlete and people remembered that,” said Langlois.
Moore was especially delighted to be honored for her work considering she was out last season due to a torn ACL.
“It feels really good,” Moore said. “I worked my butt off this season and pre-season. I made a goal for myself and that was to be on the All-Conference and All-Louisiana [teams]. We had an amazing team this year, especially our group of graduating seniors. I was always taught you do not get anywhere without good leadership, and that is exactly what we had. They all pushed us to be successful. I hope through my next two years I will lead the team like them.”
