The Lions baseball team washed away the Islanders last weekend, taking two of three games at the Southland Conference series.
The first game of the series versus Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was held Friday, April 26, where the Lions won 5-2. The Lions struggled in the second game on Saturday, April 27 in a 5-8 loss, but redeemed themselves in the third game, winning 5-4 and achieving victory in the series.
“I was proud of our guys,” said head coach Jay Artigues in a post-game interview. “We kind of challenged them in the second game, and for us to stay in the championship hunt, it was a must win. The guys did a great job coming out and then winning that game and winning the series for us.”
Artigues acknowledged the efforts of pitchers Kaleb Manuel, a senior, and Mason Klotz, a freshman, in helping the team to achieve the series win.
“It’s tough. It’s a challenge, but winning championships is a tough challenge,” said Artigues. “These guys are rising to it right now, staying in first place, competing for first place. This was a must win for us if we want to chase that championship. Kaleb Manuel and Mason Klotz came in and did a great job holding their hitters down, putting zeroes up and letting our hitters get going. Kaleb’s a senior, and he competed like one today. He’s one of our leaders, and he deserves it. He’s a great kid; he works his tail off, and I couldn’t be prouder of him. “
With the series win behind them, the Lions baseball team will continue to fight for their goal of becoming Southland Conference champions.
The Lions will play against Tulane today, April 30 at 6 p.m. in New Orleans. The game will be broadcasted by the KSLU Radio Station (90.9).
