Weekend sweep earns Lady Lions 14th home win

The Lady Lion softball team improved their home record to 14-5 after beating University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) in two of three Southland Conference games this past weekend at North Oaks Park. They are 16-19 overall and 6-9 in conference play.

Southeastern crossed home plate first in the series opener, doing so three times in the bottom of the second, to lead UTSA, 3-0. Katie Duhe outran an infield single that allowed Michelle Duhe to score the Lady Lions fourth run. Three errors by the Roadrunners in the sixth inning allowed the Lions to set the score at 7-1. Sitting down the order in the seventh, sophomore Kenna Terry closed game one with the win.

In game two, outfielder Kelsey Nichols increased her batting average to .411, despite the mercy rule causing an early sixth inning finish.

Coming off of an 8-0 shutout in game two of Saturday evening’s double-header, Southeastern looked to bounce back and take the series in Sunday’s rubber game.

“I knew that if it stayed close, we were going to be able to get the runs,” said Head Coach Pete Langlois. “I had no idea there was going to be two big home runs, but we’ll take them.”

Junior Meghan Gomez hit two home runs in the series closer, giving her a total of four this season. The first was a three run home run in the third inning and the second was a solo home run in the fifth.

“We had two runners on,” said Gomez. “I was thinking just a base hit through to score the first girl on second base.” Both of her home runs helped secure points.

Southeastern closed the weekend by posting a 4-1 victory over the Roadrunners.

A small section of students have been present at every home game, wearing matching green shirts that display their group name, “The Roaring Posse.” They have been vocal throughout entire games, singing songs while stomping the bleachers as they cheer on the Lady Lions. Coach Langlois cites the group as helpful support.

“These guys are part of our team,” said Langlois. “If I could take them on the road, I would.”

Lady Lion Softball is on the road this upcoming weekend, facing the Northwestern State Demons for three games of conference play in Natchitoches, La. Visit www.lionssports.net  for live stats on the weekend series.
