The Lady Lions softball team began their journey to the conference tournament in the spring with several games over the past month.

After facing Louisiana State University-Eunice to kick off the fall schedule, the Lady Lions took on the Lady Bears of Baton Rouge Community College Oct. 1. Three pitchers made their way to the mound during the matchup against BRCC. The Lady Lions captured their first win of the fall season by defeating the Lady Bears 14-0. Earning the win for the Lady Lions was junior Madison Vige, who was also making her debut for Southeastern. This game provided the debut of several other freshmen, including Nicole Ayala, Sydney McCullough, Shelby Stewart and Carlie Whittington, among others.

Next up on the plate for the Lady Lions were the Lady Eagles of Meridian Community College, who they faced in a scrimmage Oct. 10. No official score was taken for the game. Pitching the majority of the scrimmage for the Lady Lions was senior Spencer Adkinson. Head coach Pete Langlois was content with her performance.

“I wanted to see if [Adkinson] could hold five innings and get the outs when we needed them, and she did,” said Langlois.

With the entire fall season being composed of non-conference games, testing the team’s depth has been a focus point of Langlois and the rest of the coaching staff. The mix of games and scrimmages has provided an opportunity for the Lady Lions to play many of the new faces and transfers that have joined the team over the off-season. Following the game against Meridian Community College, Langlois had positive comments regarding a few freshmen on the team.

“Our second baseman Grace DeLee has done really well and then in the two-hole Kinsey Nichols has also done really well out there. We’re getting a lot of good out of her,” said Langlois.

The Lady Lions finish up their fall season this week with a pair of games. Southeastern faces off against Copiah-Lincoln Community College in a double header Oct. 14. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m at North Oak Park.

Finishing off the season will be a round robin tournament Oct. 15, including teams from Jones County Community College and BRCC. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at North Oak Park.

The Lady Lions will begin their Spring season on Feb. 6, when they host the 2015 Lion Classic.
