After another meet over with in the track and field season, the team continues to impress. The men’s and women’s squads returned home last weekend after participating in the University of Alabama Vulcan Invitational, with several members returning with medals.

A fresh face to the men’s squad, junior transfer Ashley Riley did more than place second in the 400-meter dash for the Lions. In his first ever event donning the green and gold, the Bahamas native broke a school record for the race by finishing with a time of 48.4.

Several other teammates joined in on shattering school records. With the team of Domonique White, Vanessa Williams, Bayleigh Butler and Kayla Quincy, Southeastern was able to place fourth in the women’s 4×400 meter relay. The team set a new school record for the relay with a time of 3:57.44.

Junior Raheem Brown also showed up for the Lions sprint team. The Houston native finished third in the men’s 200-meter dash after logging in a time of 21.92.

The Lion throwers shone once more for the men’s squad. In the weight throw event, Southeastern comprised the top three finishes. Taking first place was junior Jonathan Kinchen, who tossed for 67 feet, 2.29 inches. Coming right behind him in second and third were his teammates Alex Young (65-6.21) and Brett Olsen (61-11.69).

The women throwers did their fair share of helping the team also. Senior Amber Darville placed fourth in the women’s shot put with a toss of 13.57 meters. Head coach Sean Brady expressed confidence in throwers coach Lucais MacKay.

“Coach MacKay is doing an excellent job managing that group,” said head coach Sean Brady in an interview with lionsports.net. “They’re a talented group of guys that are really starting to gel as a unit.”

Two more throwers would go on to join in on the top 10 for the weight throw. Junior Jimmy LeBlanc finished in fifth while junior Austin Funk rounded out the Lions in ninth place.

The jumpers from the Southeastern team found success in Alabama as several members were able to place in their events. Freshman Devin King gained his second win in one month after jumping a height of 16 feet, 4.85 inches.

Another jumper shining for the Lions was Kadarius Williams. The Prairieville native placed second in the men’s high jump with a leap of 6-4.77.

In the women’s high jump, senior Ikea Kaufman was able to jump 5-2.59. The height earned her a third place finish.

The track and field team will be in action again when they travel to Lake Charles to participate in the Cameron Communications Indoor meet. For a full schedule and more news on Southeastern athletics, visit lionsports.net.
