    Lions roll through Alabama Relays

    Southeastern’s Track and Field teams competed against rivals this weekend, remaining on top when they traveled to the Chrimson Tide’s territory and participated in the John Mitchelle Alabama Relays.

    The event lasted three days, from Thursday, March 19 to Saturday, March 21.

    Starting off the competition was the men and women’s hammer throw followed by the women’s javelin throw.

    Junior Jonathan Kinchen led the men’s performance, finishing in third place with a distance of 202 feet and 11 inches.

    It was a close call for both fifth and six place between junior Alex Young and senior Brett Olsen, but Young took the fifth place title with a distance of 198 feet, nine inches while Olsen had a near 197 feet, two inches.

    Junior Jimmy LeBlanc finished in 14th place with a distance of 181 feet, one inch.

    Leading the charge for the women’s teams were junior throwers Nicole Delesdernier and previous Southland  Conference Women’s Athlete of the Week, Misha Frazier. Each athlete finished third in their events; in the hammer throw Frazier threw for a distance of 181 feet, three inches and in javelin Delesdernier threw 133 feet, one inch.

    Finishing 19th and 20th in the hammer throw were seniors Amber Darville with 146 feet, five inches and Kierra Crews with 144 feet.

    The Lions continued to place high rankings Friday for track and field. Leading the Lions were freshman pole-vaulter Devin King and junior sprinter Ashley Riley.

    Each runner finished in second place; Riley ran the men’s 400-meter dash with a time of 48.50 and in the men’s pole vault King accomplished a height of 17 feet, 0.75 inches. 

    Frazier continued to lead by performance again when she finished fourth in the women’s shot put with 47 feet, 11.75 inches.

    Freshman sprinter Daijah Washington placed seventh place in the women’s 100-meter dash with a time of 12.33, followed by Nakiya Smith in eighth with her time of 12.40.

    Junior Collin Rowland and senior Derek Hampton placed fifth and sixth in the men’s javelin.

    On the last day of the competition Southeastern’s women’s 4×100 meter relay team won fourth place with a time of 46.26 through the combined efforts of juniors Sharonna Williams and Domonique White, freshman Washington and senior Shanetria Thomas.

    In the men’s 4×100 event they placed fifth through the efforts of Juniors Raheem Brown and Kadarius Williams, sophomore Ken Breland and senior Billy Minnifield.

    In the men’s discus Olsen placed sixth, junior Kaelynn Smith placed 12th in the women’s 100-meter dash and freshman Clarissa Smith placed 10th in the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase.

    The Lions will next compete in the Texas Relays on March 25.
